    Scientific names: Quercus robur (Pedunculate or common oak)
    and Quercus petraea (Sessile oak).
    Common names: Irish Oak and Sessile Oak
    Origin: Oak belongs to the genus Quercus which comprises over 600 different species of trees.

    To the Celts, the Oak tree was sacred.
    It represented strength and security.
    The Oak grows slowly and can survive for centuries.
    Up to the Middle Ages Ireland was covered with Wild Oak Forests.
    Wild pigs fed on its acorns.
    Oakwood is strong and durable with a silvery grain.
    It was used for ship building and charcoal for the making of steel and gunpowder.
